Why: His films are passionate tributes to women - the female characters (celebrated by Almodóvar for their most unconventionally attractive features) are emotional and troubled, while transvestites, mothers and sympathetic daughters are all lovingly filtered through his female-identified lens. He says: 'Women have more secrets, more capacity to surprise. They are more shameless. They tell their girlfriends even what they do in bed with their husbands.'
